BLACK BUTTE RESIDENCE (by Lever Architecture)
Designed as a retreat for an extended family, the Black Butte Residence sits on the edge of Black Butte Ranch in the high desert landscape of Central Oregon. The split form creates three types of spaces, each framing one of the area’s prominent mountain peaks. The design priorities natural and regional materials, balancing durability with energy efficiency. On the exterior, dark-stained cedar siding and a black metal standing seam roof integrate with the forested environment. Large, high-performance European triple-glazed windows are strategically placed to maximize natural light and offer unobstructed mountain views. The interior emphasizes natural materials with glulam columns, Douglas Fir ceilings, and Oregon white oak floors and custom millwork. A 16.8 kW PV array is estimated to offset most of the home’s annual energy consumption.
